FOODS THAT ARE SAFE

Fruits -Cherry, Apple, Watermelon, Bannanna, Pears, Strawberry, Cantaloupe, Papaya, Mango, Peaches, Pumpkin, Squash, Honeydew, Cranberries, Rasberry, Blackberry, Plum

Veggies- Carrots, Sweet Potato, Raddish, Turnip, Green Pepper, Asparagus, Corn (unseasoned), Broccoli, Peas(the mushy part inside),

FOODS THAT ARE NOT SAFE

Fruits- Grapes, Raisins, Avocados, Oranges, Lemons, Lime, Grapefruit,Pineapple.

Veggies - Onions, Lettuce, Garlic, Chives

Anything with small seeds presents a choking hazard and overly acidic fruits are definitely not good for hedgies

Grapes - are toxic to most small animals including hedgehogs. They cause renal, liver and organ failure.

Raisins - are not only toxic but can get caught in the roofs of their mouths.

Tea Tree oil - this includes, tea tree shampoo, tea trea oil, tea tree sprays and anything tea tree. This can be fatal in as little as one dose or application. It causes renal, liver and complete organ failure.

Avocados - Many people feel avocados are toxic, others feel they are safe. Personally, I would not risk it.

Ivermectin - Injected ivermectin has been the cause of many hedgehog deaths yet it has also been widely used on many hedgehogs with no problem. When a safe alternative is available, Revolution, it is simply not worth the risk to use ivermectin.
Topical and oral ivermectin has been linked to an increased risk of bladder cancers.

Nuts & seeds - can get caught in the roofs of their mouth and there is a risk of them digging an eye out will trying to claw out the nut. Nuts are fattening and provide minimal nutritional benefit.

Chocolate

Milk, dairy products - hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and cannot digest dairy. Leads to upset stomach and diarrhea.

Junk food of all types - for the same reasons it is unhealthy for humans

HELPFUL ITEMS TO HAVE INCASE YOUR HEDGEHOG GET SICK

Regular original Polysporin is safe to use. Any other formulas are toxic.

A card with your vets phone number and address. Also add alternate vets phone numbers and addresses and an emergency vets phone number and address.

Always have a human heating pad. If you do not need it on a regular basis you will have it for emergency use.

2 cans of Hills AD cat food which is available at your vets. This is used for syringe feeding and is a fine consistency that will easily go through a syringe. Make sure it is room temperature or warmer before feeding. (keep track of the expiry date and replace as needed)

A couple of bottles of pedialite for syringing water. Make sure it is room temperature or warmer before syringing it. (keep track of the expiry date and replace as needed)

A can or two of human Boost or Ensure as it is a good source of nutrition for an ill hedgehog and it is easily syringed. Make sure it is room temperature or warmer before use. (keep track of the expiry date and replace as needed)

A supply of syringes. Either ones made specifically for syringing small animals, or 1ml syringes available at any vet or pharmacy. These wear out quickly with use so have numerous ones on hand.

A supply of white or predominantly white liners or receiving blankets to use as bedding. These enable you to see what colour the hedgehogs bodily functions are. Baby receiving blankets are cheap and available at any department store.

A mid sized clear sterlite or rubbermaid bin for use as a sick cage. It prevents drafts and is easily transportable Ensure it is at least 15" tall. Ventilate the lid. This bin will also hold all of your emergency supplies. This cage can also be used in the event of a power outage as it will be easier to keep warm.

A roll of paper towels.

A package of sterile gauze pads. A human first aid kit works well.
